Farewell for now

Well yesterday was Zach's much-anticipated departure for boot camp. It's something I think the whole family has been dreading since Zach told us he was going to join the Army. It seemed so far into the future at first but the day definitely snuck up on us. It's such a mix of emotion because while we are extremely proud of the life he is choosing for himself and very happy for him, we are also sad because we know this commitment will make his physical presence more scarce for the next five years.

Growing up Zach was the quiet, youngest brother who always got the short end of the stick. Or at least that's how it seemed to his even-more-mistreated sister who was one of the dreaded middle children! It is amazing to see how we've changed over the years. Of all of the siblings, I think Zach's transformation into adulthood has been the most surprising. He has grown up to be such a good man. (Not that we ever doubted he would be!) He is someone who will do anything for his friends and family, and is very passionate about the things he believes in. He is also confident in himself and the direction of his life. The military was the right choice for him, and I hope he never feels guilty about that because it is such a wonderful sacrifice to make.

It's rare for an entire family to live in the same state these days, so I think we all knew the day would come when we couldn't all be together. It doesn't make it any easier to swallow, though. Kyle and I loved having Zach in Stillwater. It was comforting to know we could call him at a moment's notice when we wanted to invite him over for dinner, borrow his truck, ask for help on the yard... The list goes on and on. While it was nice to have him at our fingertips for those things, the best part was that it helped me re-establish a connection with him that we'd lost when I left for college and didn't see him as much. It was great. But what will be even greater is getting to live through all of his new experiences and watch him achieve his dreams.

I will definitely be thinking about him over the next few months, but especially tomorrow on Independence Day as we celebrate our freedom that is possible because of people like my little brother. I am so proud to be his sister.

Here are a few photos from his going away party on Sunday:

It was hot, but in the evening it cooled off and half the party moved to the deck.

My older cousin Austin and his family live in Mississippi. We got a surprise on Friday when we found out they were going to be able to come to Zach's going way and stay for the 4th of July. Asher was so excited to have little cousins to play with!

Asher had fun pulling Austin Jr. and Madison in the wagon. Unfortunately I don't think he could actually pull them so Mom did a little pushing, too. Tyrus and Lisa were out of town on vacation, but Maple and Scout joined in on the fun!

This picture was taken on Monday. Zach had to report to his recruiting station in Stillwater, so we got to meet them for lunch and see him off. Asher sure does love hanging out with Uncle!
